Mardi Gras 2014

My friends and I were able to get to two parades this year. Earlier in the schedule, we went to the LaShe's parade since our friend knew someone in the parade. And later that week we went to the parade on Joe Cain day. Which was quite funny, we decided to stand at Govt/Broad and we missed the entire parade. Apparently if we had walked up a few more blocks we would have been in the right area for the actual parade!

One of my coworkers brought in the elusive salted caramel moonpies since he bought them to throw in the Joe Cain parade.

Perhaps next year, we'll actually get to see the Joe Cain parade!

Mardi Gras King Cake

Good morning, everyone! My sister has been pestering me for years to get a King Cake for the Mardi Gras season from our favorite place to go in New Orleans, Sucre....a delicious confectionery/bakery shop. I finally decided to order one this year, a plus in their favor...they deliver!

Our King Cake came in yesterday by FedEx! Woohoo!

 

Don't you love the box it came in? And inside was well wrapped King Cake complete with strands of beads in the traditional Mardi Gras colors, a card describing the history of the Kind Cake, and even a tiny purple baby charm in case you are taking the cake to a party and wanted someone to find it in their slice;)

Some would say that it might be a bit pricey for a cake, but I've only had one other King Cake in my life from a local bakery and it pales in comparison to the yumminess of Sucre's creation!

I highly, HIGHLY recommend Sucre for King Cakes! Not to mention all their other deletable goodies at their shop in New Orleans!

Mardi Gras 2011

Last evening, my sister and I met up with some friends of hers from work to go and see two Mardi Gras parades downtown. We had alot of fun being extremely undignified by screaming at the top of our lungs for all matter of throws.

The first parade to roll had a simile theme with every float decorated according to a saying. One such float was called 'Mad as a Wet Hen' and featured a rather angry looking hen and other decorations while another float called 'Nothing But Death and Taxes' had all the revelers dressed as Uncle Sam. The second parade to roll was the Mystics of Time, which had some amazing floats featuring several dragons (one blew fire) and a host of mythical creatures.

We were hoping to catch the elusive coconut flavored moonpie this year, but once we went through our stash of goodies, we realized that we had only one! (sigh) Our favorite catch of the night was a large stuffed ram from the MOT parade and a Ty beanie rabbit named Ears.

To everyone in Mobile and New Orleans, hope you have a safe Mardi Gras today!

Mardi Gras stash

Hi! My family and I went to the Mardi Gras parade for the Mystic Stripers Society. It was quite fun and a lot more people came out than we originally thought considering the fact that it was lightly sleeting! The crowds would have been huge if there wasn't the threat of snow.



As a child, my sister and I were never allowed to go the Mardi Gras parades, more to do with safety than anything else. I didn't go to my first parade until I was in college and some of my sister's friends wanted to go. Last night's parade was my fifth visit to see one. I've always gone with my friends, it was nice to go with my family :)

We decided to go last night because my cousin has never been to Mardi Gras before. He is originally from Michigan and has just recently moved to Mobile to finish his college studies. Being from a state that doesn't celebrate Mardi Gras, he was excited to be able to go to a parade. As a 'tourist' so to speak, he actually had his camera out and was taking pictures of the different floats :P

I caught a hat-full of beads and maybe one moonpie (they are hard to catch!). LOL I stole some of my sister's moonpies to put in the photo! My sister's friend caught the MSS spear for me as we were both reaching for it and he already had one from a previous parade.

What to do with the beads? I know I want to keep one strand, which was the first one I caught last night. It is a strand of pink hearts, perfect for a Mardi Gras memento as the parade is so close to Feb. 14th. I'll have to think about what to do with the rest.

Update: It is snowing again. Apparently, I know nothing about snowy weather. It will sleet for a second, snow the next. LOL

What do I plan on doing with the day off from work? Hmm...I think I'll work on my LHN design and watch the new version of Emma by the BBC. I purchased it Tuesday when it come out ;) Geeky, I know!!!
